Himeji Castle

This castle, nicknamed the White Heron Castle, is the centerpoint of Himeji City, 650km west of Tokyo. Though the location had been fortified since before the Edo Period, it was in 1601 that the castle was built as it is today. It was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu's son-in-law, as a defensive position for the Tokugawa. It is covered in white plaster to make it fireproof. It is one of the few castles of Japan that remains undamaged by war for 400 years.
