Nara Period (710-794)

The Nara Period began when the emperor Gemmei established a capital in Nara in 710. This remained the capital until 784, when it was moved to Nagaoka, and then to Heian (now Kyoto) in 794. The Nara Period was marked by Chinese influence. Nara was modeled after the Chinese capital Chang'an, and the Japanese adopted Chinese fashion, the Chinese writing system, and Buddhism in this era.
