Shimane Prefecture


Shimane Prefecture is near the very western end of the island of Honshu. With a population of 761 thousand, it is the second-least populous prefecture in Japan. Its capital, Matsue, has a population of 196 thousand. It is mainly significant for Izumo Taisha, one of the most important Shinto shrines in the nation.
