Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome
Originally the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall, this building was one of the few near the hypocenter that remained somewhat intact after the atomic bomb explosion. It was originally planned to be torn down, but in 1966 the city decided to preserve it indefinitely as a memorial to the atomic bomb. It was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
